Vale Miss Joy RansleyMany of you will be saddened to hear of the recent passing of Miss Joy Ransley, who was a master teacher and examiner of the Royal Academy of Dance spanning more than 50 years, as well as being pre-eminent in the world of Irish dance with the many successes that her Australian students gained at World Championships. Many of our Mackay teachers and students will remember Joy through the several ballet workshops which she conducted for Warralong Studio and then Warralong Dance Centre through the late 60’s to the early 80’s. She was a passionate teacher, who possessed that wonderful ability to bring the best out of each student, no detail too small to give particular attention to, so that the dancer would be at their best. This carried through from detail in the technique, artistry, to the cut and fit of the leotard, pointe shoes, flattering hairstyle etc. She was a teacher who made a huge impression on me in the early days of my teaching career, and I learnt so much from her over those many years, for which I have always been so grateful. As well as coming as guest teacher to Warralong workshops, so impressed was I by what she could impart to her students, that we organised for Joy, and her sister Dawn, who was also a lovely teacher, to bring some of her students to Mackay to give the Mackay students the opportunity of working beside them in class, and to get to know them during recreation moments. The Sydney students were billeted with families of the Mackay students. On another occasion through the work of the Warralong Dance Society we were able to take a cohort of Mackay students down to Sydney to work with the Sydney students under the expert guidance of Joy and her sister Dawn. These were invaluable experiences for the Mackay students. It also highlighted the courage and generosity of Joy Ransley, whose indomitable spirit and passion for the dance drove her to take on new and untried projects.I am sure that so many of those early students can remember their classes with Miss Joy. For those of you who danced with Mackay Dance Theatre and then QYD, you may remember in 1976 , during another workshop, Joy staged Act 2 of “Swan Lake” which was a part of the Gala Evening of Ballet that we organised when Robyn and Francois Klaus were on holidays from the Hamburg Ballet. Robyn and Francois were in the principal roles, with a stunning backdrop painted by local artist Del Newport and a new Tarkett floor for the first time on the Theatre Royal stage, with a corps de ballet of local teenagers. This again spoke volumes for the energy, generosity, and passion of Joy Ransley to embrace new projects. For me, Joy Ransley was one of the mentors in my early teaching days who opened up new insights into teaching methods. Her encouragement, good humour, and energy engendered a very easy friendship. She will hold her place as one of those unstoppable forces who believed in getting the job done, and who also believed in covering every detail to produce the end goal. The large number of her student successes are a testament to her skill and fortitude. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience Joy Ransley…..as a teacher and as a good friend. Rest In Peace Joy. ... See MoreSee Less
